Clarke Pond
August 8th, 2007 by SallyClark Pond is another hidden gem in Canaan. And although it is listed in the AMC Quiet Water book, I rarely see many other kayaks or canoes. Clark Pond is a very small pond with three or four cabins on the pond itself, but still very quiet. If you are looking for a quick couple of hour paddle trip, then this is a great location. Boats are allowed on the pond, but only small horsepower fishing vessels.
At one far end of the pond is a long beach, perfect for breaking up your paddle with a lunch or picnic. I often take my kayaking pooch with me to Clark Pond as the beach is a great place for her to play ball. At the end closest to the put-in you are often likely to be serenaded by the noisiest (and largest) group of frogs you have ever heard. When the water is high enough you can paddle a little ways into their “area” for true surround sound.
You are likely to encounter a few swimmers at Clark Pond and an occasional fisher-person, but that’s about it.
Put-in
Easy sand boat launch, not too shallow. Large parking lot with ample parking.
